Parish Church of Saints Peter and Paul in Coiano restored to former splendour

The historic “rest stop” along the Via Francigena, as recorded in the diary of Archbishop Sigeric over a millennium ago, is once more accessible to visitors, pilgrims and hikers travelling along the ancient route.

The restoration project, supported by Fondazione CR Firenze in collaboration with the Municipality of Castelfiorentino, has carefully preserved and enhanced the Romanesque church’s architectural integrity. Earlier phases focused on structural stabilization, including the bell tower and roof, followed by extensive work on the façade and interior elements such as flooring, altar, decorations and the baptismal font. The most recent additions include a scenic access staircase, completing the revitalization of the site.

Attention now turns to the surrounding landscape. A new redevelopment project, scheduled for completion in spring 2027, will transform the outdoor area into a welcoming and accessible environment. Plans include a landscaped park and two pedestrian paths connecting the church to a nearby parking area and rest facilities. These paths will also lead to a quiet spot nestled within an olive grove, designed for reflection and rest. Accessibility is a key focus, with provisions such as a stairlift ensuring that all visitors can reach the church entrance comfortably.

Alongside physical improvements, a cultural programme has been launched to promote the site. Free monthly openings and guided tours will offer visitors deeper insight into the church’s history and restoration. Events, including concerts tied to local festivals, will further enhance its role as a vibrant cultural landmark, blending heritage, tourism and community identity.
