Together with Camilla Pandolfi, CEO and Head of R&D; Cristiana Favretto, Design and Communication; Antonio Girardi, Technological Development and Sustainability; and Elisa Azzarello, Administration and Agronomy, PNAT was created as a spin-off of the University of Florence. The company develops innovative solutions to integrate plants into architecture and urban spaces in order to improve air quality, sustainability, and psychological health.
Biophilic design was brought to the spaces of Careggi University Hospital, giving greenery to the healthcare setting in efforts to benefit not only the environment but also the psyche of workers and patients, improving mood and alleviating stress. Fabbrica dell’Aria® is an innovative botanical filtration system that purifies indoor air from pollutants through the use of plants. Fully automated, the bio-machine includes fans, an irrigation system and technical lighting, with each installation equipped with sensors for real-time monitoring of environmental data and air pollutant levels.
Inaugurated on September 8, the maternity department was equipped with two of the systems designed by Stefano Mancuso and built by PNAT, made possible thanks to the support of the Careggi ETS Foundation and the generosity of various supporters, including Unicoop Firenze and Ferruccio Ferragamo (Il Borro Toscana). The project forms part of a broader plan titled Careggi Biophilic Hospital, which includes various initiatives aimed at making hospital environments, both internal and external, increasingly connected to nature in order to improve human well-being. Projects of this calibre contribute to making Florence a city of knowledge and innovation.
