After more than 40 years of abandonment, the building has now returned to being an integral part of Florence’s urban and cultural fabric thanks to a comprehensive program of restoration and enhancement by the internationally renowned Florentine architectural firm Archea Associati led by starchitect Marco Casamonti.
Four years in the remaking, the listed building underwent extensive structural consolidation, including the reconstruction of floors and roofing in accordance with the original geometry, as well as the reproduction of timber trusses using traditional techniques. The intervention has restored full legibility to the traditional Italian-style theatre, with a horseshoe-shaped auditorium and four tiers of boxes, seating about 300, while integrating state-of-the-art technological systems and equipment.
The stage tower is equipped with advanced stage technologies, including a large automated LED screen and a Dolby Atmos sound system, making the auditorium suitable for innovative performance languages. Care was given to the restoration of the 19th-century decor: stuccoes, gilding, and capitals. A new carpet with high acoustic performance further enhances the sound quality of the space.
Climate control and LED lighting allow precise control of lighting scenarios, including the recreation of a “starry sky” effect. Above the fourth tier of boxes, an event hall with a sliding glass roof has been created, offering views over the cityscape. There are also plans for a bookstore–café with a jazz space and a kitchen capable of hosting events for up to 150 guests, expanding the building’s potential as a multifunctional venue.
Since being presented to the press, Member of the European Parliament and former Mayor of Florence Dario Nardella held his fiftieth birthday party at Teatro Nazionale. At present, the theater is open only for private events.
