Tuscany’s cinema milestones

2026 is a landmark year for cinema in Florence and Tuscany, with three major anniversaries. The 50 Days of Cinema festival series and the Toscana Film Commission both celebrate 20 years, while Cinema La Compagnia marks its 10th anniversary.

50 Days of Cinema

The 20th edition of 50 Days of Cinema runs from October 6 to December 10, bringing nine international festivals to Cinema La Compagnia and venues across Florence. Fondazione CR Firenze is again offering its 50 Days of Cinema card, including 500 free subscriptions for under-25s and a 50-euro discounted option. Both provide 16 admissions during the season. Cardholders will also enter a draw for ten Golden Passes, offering free cinema admission throughout 2027 in celebration of La Compagnia’s anniversary.

The season opens with Middle East Now (October 6–11), exploring contemporary culture and social change through film, art, music and theatre. FánHuā Chinese Film Festival (October 14–18) celebrates Chinese cinema from classics to recent feature films. Festival di Cinema e Donne (October 21–25) focuses on international women directors and pays tribute to Jane Campion, marking the 30th anniversary of The Portrait of a Lady. France Odeon (October 28–November 1) celebrates its 18th edition with a tribute to Brigitte Bardot, including Le Repos du guerrier (Love on a Pillow), filmed around Florence.

Festival dei Popoli (November 2–8), now in its 67th edition, the festival showcases new global documentary works and emerging talents with an expanded programme for young audiences. Lo Schermo dell’arte (November 11–15) focuses on Uzbek filmmaker Saodat Ismailova and presents Jean-Luc Godard’s final works in Italy for the first time.

The season continues with the Florence Queer Festival (November 18–22) and the River to River Florence Indian Film Festival (December 3–8) and concludes on December 10 with the Premio N.I.C.E. città di Firenze, celebrating Italian cinema and N.I.C.E.’s own 35th anniversary.

Toscana Film Commission turns 20

Over two decades, the Toscana Film Commission has helped establish Tuscany as a major production hub. It has supported around 2,300 audiovisual projects, generating an estimated 184 million euro for the local economy across approximately 19,000 filming and preparation days.

Productions have employed around 76,000 actors and extras, 11,000 crew members and worked with 8,000 local businesses. Florence, Siena and its province and Pisa remain among the region’s most popular filming locations. International productions supported by the commission include Inferno, Quantum of Solace, The Twilight Saga: New Moon and The Brutalist, as well as TV series such as Medici, My Brilliant Friend and Succession

Cinema La Compagnia turns 10

Having begun programming in October 27, 2016, in ten years, Cinema La Compagnia has hosted nearly 8,000 screenings and welcomed more than one million admissions, including online audiences through its PiùCompagnia platform.

As the Casa del Cinema della Regione Toscana, La Compagnia focuses on international festivals, premieres, independent and non-commercial films, filmmaker events and educational screenings, with many films presented in their original language with Italian subtitles.

Together, these anniversaries highlight Tuscany’s growing role as both a destination for filmmakers and a centre for international cinema.
